Keep Calm and Call Your Mom

Of all the Hallmark holidays, I think most would agree that Mother’s Day is one of the most deserving. Move over National Donut Day, I have more memories of mom making kick-ass pancakes with warm maple syrup, that both warm the tummy and heart. Think about it, when someone makes it on TV, who do they give a shout out to? “Hi mom!” When we are sick, the first person we want is mommy. And who’s the second most important person to a woman in the delivery room, their mother! Moms just seem to always have the right words to make everything better and more comfortable.

Don’t get me wrong, I adore my father, but when the month of May rolls around I think about mama growing me in her belly for 9 months. The brave process of bringing me into the world that half the hubbies pass out from just WATCHING! Moms are strong! They spend endless months trading out their sleep for poopy diapers and trading their bodies to the boobateria. Oh and people out there should all be warned of the wrath of a Mama Bear. There is nothing more terrifying and impressive than watching her defend those cubs.

Now let me digress and acknowledge all the women who are mothers in different ways. It’s not necessary to have biological children to play an important mom role in someone’s life. I have many aunts, older wise girlfriends, teachers, and angel strangers who’ve given me incredible advice, love, that life-changing push, and most importantly their time, that has shaped some of my best decisions and qualities.

I personally don’t have human children and I know many gorgeous souls share with me the blessing of being a mom to fur babies. Caring for animals is rewarding and fills your heart so full. Not to forget how healthy they are for our mental and emotional state. The same way a baby cooing makes a new mom smile, a kitty purring or happy dog snorting or barking playfully fills the soul. My cat and two dogs are all rescues. Adopting your furry child and mothering an orphaned pet brings so much joy and love.

So how do we show appreciation and love back to these women whose job lasts a lifetime? Forget just “Mother’s Day”—throughout the year make the time to randomly send flowers, a card, a call, a hug, a night out for cocktails or even tea, and give gifts that are meaningful and thoughtful.
