Fuel Your Adventure with Omega Sport+

Omega Sport+

Omega Sport+ ™ (US/CA) is Flora’s latest oil blend creation. With classics like Udo’s Oil 3·6·9 Blend (US/CA) and newer formulations like 7 Sources (US) for vegan EPA and DHA, we knew that another oil blend would really have to bring something exciting and new to the table. Flora has been proud to sponsor various athlete ambassadors and trail races over the years and we wanted to iterate on a sport blend that was multi-faceted and not just providing fat for fuel.

Omega Sport+ ™ combines ingredients for pre and post workout phases so you’re covered for both performance and recovery. It has MCTs (medium chain triglycerides) for quick energy, long chain fatty acids from flax oil as a longer term/endurance energy source, vitamin D for bone and muscle health, as well as evening primrose oil and turmeric for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory recovery support. Vitamin D and turmeric are both fat soluble and turmeric aids the digestion of fats so there’s some nice synergy between ingredients as well.

Turmeric is known to not absorb that well from the gut so various “technologies” have come about to aid its absorption. In this case, clinically proven CurcuWin® is the specific turmeric extract. It’s 46 times better absorbed than regular turmeric and it’s standardized to provide 20% curcuminoids by weight, the key active ingredients. It achieves this superior absorption due to it being “microencapsulated”. This turmeric extract stays active in the body for at least 12 hours too, which is important when it comes to recovery after workouts.

The MCTs are sourced from coconut and palm oil (sustainably sourced) and are primarily caprylic and capric acid, with very low amounts of lauric acid. These proportions are what sets MCTs apart from coconut oil. Caprylic and capric acid are fats that are quickly absorbed and go straight to the liver to be burned as fuel for the body.

Omega Sport+ ™ is packaged in amber glass, nitrogen flushed for freshness, and is also gluten- and soy-free. It can easily be added to protein shakes and smoothies for sustained energy and enhanced recovery. We’re excited to hear how people are incorporating Omega Sport+™ in their workout regimen and what kind of results they’re getting—let us know in the comments below!

How is the Omega Sport+ use? Just drink it?

      Hi David,
Omega Sport+ can be used as a smoothie booster, drizzled on steamed veggies, or even added to salad dressings. Just make sure you add it after cooking as you don’t want to heat the oil. Thanks!

      Hi Joe,
Thanks for the question and comments. It’s great to ask this type of question. The health of humans and the health of the planet really cannot be separated, can they?
Yes – in many areas oil palm replaced other cultivated plants and natural growth and traditional practices, due to the higher income potential of palm oil. This was very destructive, done without consultation with indigenous people nor compensation, with the issues of mono-cropping, forest and peatland desruction, human and wildlife displacement,
and carbon emissions from burning, as well as human rights issues all being involved. Oil palm plantations in Malaysia, Indonesia, Borneo and East Africa in particular have razed what were previously, and what still could be, the most biodiverse lands on earth. Malaysian and Indonesian palm oil account for about 85% of the world’s production, and create the reputation for all palm oil.

Flora gets MCTs only from RSPO-certified sustainable coconut and palm oils from the Philippines, to support those with responsible practices. These growers are RSPO certified only once they verify that there is no clearing of forests. They must not endanger areas that contain fragile ecosystems or areas critical to meeting basic or traditional community needs. They protect endangered species, and practice significantly reduced use of pesticides and fires. They insist on fair treatment of workers, according to local and international labor rights standards. And they are held accountable to be sure they are consulting with and regularly informing local communities before and during development of palm plantations.

In terms of the healthfulness of palm oil? That is complicated but Flora would not offer MCTs if we did not think they could promote health.
The debate seems to center on the healthfulness of saturated fat, cholesterol, heat-damaged fat, hydrogenated fat, and fat that has undergone other processing. Saturated fat and cholesterol are now political issues and thus the debate. Many no longer believe that these are the real causes of heart disease, though. The balance of the science, has undergone a broad shift in understanding as scientific studies change our perspectives.

Processing is key with fats. Our oil blends are made with extreme care and then tested to be sure that we never release a rancid oil, or one that is high in heavy metals, microbial contamination, peroxides, etc. We are proud of our reputation for producing top quality oils that are supportive of health.

Some people believe the science that states that saturated fats have a healthy place in our diet and can be beneficial to health. They seek to consume them, in amounts that suit their physiology. They may also understand the latest science that shows that cholesterol in food is not a predictor of heart disease promotion. These people are seeking MCTs since they are metabolized to ketones and burned for energy more readily and as such they aren’t stored as fat as much. How fast your body switches to using fat for fuel depends on how adapted you are to using ketones as fuel.

The scientific research on this was reviewed by the experts at Authority Nutrition, and then summed up in an easy to read format in the article below. If you wish to read both sides, they do present both.
